US designer salaries plateau as equity refreshes slow — 2026 mid-year report
Tech · 6 min read
Recruiting data gathered from hiring platforms and in-house talent teams shows that base salaries for mid-level product designers have largely flattened compared with 2024–25 growth spurts. Companies that previously leaned on aggressive equity grants are moving to smaller, more frequent cash bonuses as public market pressures continue to temper multi-year equity commitments.
Senior-level roles and design leadership remain the exception; organizations that are actively building design orgs are still willing to offer 15–25% premiums for heads of design and design directors, particularly when the role spans product strategy and cross-functional leadership. However, the overall talent market shows fewer outsize offers for ICs compared to the late 2023–2024 period.
The plateau has driven a shift in candidate expectations: designers now negotiate more around remote work flexibility, professional development stipends, and clearer career pathing than they do around headline equity figures. Recruiters report that total-comp targets are still competitive, but breakdowns emphasize near-term cash and career investment rather than backloaded upside.
