US product designer salaries flatten in 2026 but total comp rises via equity and bonuses
Tech · 4 min read
Data from hiring platforms and in-house HR reports indicate that median base salaries for product designers across major US markets have mostly plateaued this year. Economic uncertainty and tighter hiring budgets have made companies cautious about raising fixed payroll costs.
To remain competitive, employers are compensating with larger equity packages, milestone-based bonuses, and enhanced benefits like learning stipends. For mid-level and senior hires, equity and RSU offerings explain much of the headline growth in total compensation even when base pay remains static.
Design candidates are responding by negotiating more holistically: asking for clearer vesting schedules, performance metrics tied to bonuses, and transparent equity valuations. Recruiters caution that valuation risk shifts more financial upside to employees but introduces volatility in real take-home value.
