UX Research Hiring Is Outpacing Visual Design as Companies Chase Evidence-Based Roadmaps

The growth in subscription and retention-focused product models has shifted hiring priorities toward evidence-based decision-making. In our interviews with 40 hiring managers across fintech, healthtech, and marketplaces, 70% said they increased headcount for UX research in the past 12 months, citing the need to validate multi-year roadmaps and combat churn.
Salaries for mid-to-senior UX researchers rose 10–16% year-over-year, outpacing many visual design specializations. Companies are investing in embedding researchers within product pods and offering competitive incentives for candidates who can run mixed-method programs, deliver actionable insights, and tie recommendations to KPIs like activation and retention.
For designers considering a pivot, research offers a strong pay and impact proposition—but it requires demonstrable methodological rigor. Candidates with quantitative analysis experience, repository management skills, and a track record of influencing product metrics are especially in demand and often receive faster offers and equity sweeteners.
