Valve's Steamworks adds AI-assisted asset optimization for indie studios

The new Steamworks feature runs a battery of AI-guided optimizations on uploaded builds, proposing texture compression profiles, level-of-detail (LOD) adjustments, and shader simplifications tailored to target hardware tiers. Developers get side-by-side comparisons to accept or revert each change.

Valve clarified that optimizations are suggestions and that final artifacts remain under the developer's control. The system integrates with Steam's cloud testing pool to run changes on real hardware and provide objective performance metrics across devices.

Indie developers reported that the assistant spotted costly overdraw and suggested shader fallback paths that shaved memory usage and load times without noticeable visual regressions. Valve plans to expand the toolset to include automated localization asset trimming and audio bitrate tuning.
