Velvet Engine releases EmberX, an indie-focused game engine, backed by $10M from PlayFund

EmberX is designed to be approachable for solo developers and small teams, offering a minimal API, visual scripting, and built-in live update functionality that allows developers to push changes to deployed players without full client updates. Velvet Engine highlighted its low-footprint renderer and modular network stack optimized for match-based multiplayer.

PlayFund led a $10 million investment to accelerate EmberX's middleware integrations and cloud-hosted backends. Velvet Engine said this round will also expand its asset marketplace and fund a suite of tutorials, templates, and community-led “starter kits” tailored for different genres and platforms.

The engine ships with native support for mobile, desktop, and web, plus early previews of a VR module. Pricing includes a free tier for revenue under a threshold and a subscription for studios requiring advanced analytics, AAA-grade middleware, and dedicated support.
