Women and BIPOC Designers Still Face Negotiation Gaps — New Interventions Showing Promise
Design · 5 min read
Despite advances in pay transparency, starting salary gaps continue to affect women and BIPOC designers in many regions. Organizations that pair published bands with proactive measures—such as recruiter training, offer calibration, and voluntary salary‑negotiation coaching—report smaller gaps in candidates' initial offers.
Some companies now route offers through a central compensation team rather than individual hiring managers to reduce bias, while others offer ‘best offer’ policies that reduce room for negotiation disparities. Early results show these changes improve equity in starting compensation and long‑term earnings trajectories.
Designers should seek organizations with published bands and clear leveling rubrics, and take advantage of available coaching. Advocating for structured offer policies during interviews is increasingly viewed as a reasonable and effective strategy.
