X (formerly Twitter) Verification Flow Teardown: Restoring Signal Through UX
Tech · 5 min read
X has experimented with various verification models, mixing subscription-based badges with identity-verified marks. The inconsistency in badge meaning has eroded trust: users do not know whether a check means identity verification, editorial endorsement, or paid subscription.
A clearer taxonomy — distinct badges for verified identity, organizational accounts, and subscriber perks — shown with short hoverable explanations would increase signal value. Additionally, a public verification history page for accounts (displaying verification date, method, and level) would deter impersonation and provide context.
Pairing these visual signals with frictionless reporting pathways and faster remediation for impersonation cases would rebuild confidence. Crucially, the platform should avoid conflating monetization with trust indicators to preserve the integrity of identity signals.
