YouTube Shorts Discovery: UI and Algorithmic Choices for Short-Form Video
Design · 5 min read
YouTube Shorts leverages YouTube’s existing infrastructure but adapts the UX for quick consumption: vertical format, swipe navigation, and overlay affordances like 'like' and 'share'. Shorts are integrated into the broader YouTube experience, creating cross-traffic between long-form videos and short clips.
Algorithmically, Shorts uses both watch-time and outbound behaviors (e.g., clicking to the main video) as signals. Thumbnail cropping and title length are optimized differently than long-form videos, encouraging creators to think in hooks and thumbnail-centric framing. Monetization cues—shorts fund and promotion—are surfaced gradually to professionalize creators while retaining low barrier-to-entry.
Discovery relies on a mix of personalized feeds and trending tabs, and the product balances promotion of new creators with support for established channels. The result is an ecosystem where creators can use Shorts as discovery funnels into longer content, and where UI design nudges users to oscillate between bite-sized and deep-viewing experiences.
