YouTube Shorts Editor: Mobile Editing Usability Teardown

The Shorts editor now exposes timeline trimming, layer-based stickers, and AI caption alignment that automatically syncs text to audio. These features accelerate production but push mobile devices toward complex interactions that used to be desktop-only.

We test common creator workflows and identify pain points: cramped timeline controls, unclear undo boundaries, and CPU-heavier operations that cause dropped frames during trimming. The editor's contextual help is minimal, leaving creators to rely on trial-and-error for advanced tasks like keyframe edits.

Suggested improvements include a condensed gesture taxonomy for timeline actions, a mode for power editing with larger touch targets, and optimized previews that render at lower fidelity during edits. The design balances speed and capability, but better affordances for precision will help creators produce higher-quality Shorts on mobile.
